How to Balance Chemical Equations: A Visual Atom-Count Method

Start with an atom inventory

Write each element in a small table and count how many atoms appear among the reactants and products. For methane combustion, carbon is already balanced: one carbon in CH₄ and one in CO₂. Hydrogen is not: four on the left and two in one H₂O molecule on the right.

Placing a coefficient 2 before H₂O gives four hydrogen atoms on the right. But it also changes the oxygen count, which is why the inventory must be updated after each step.

Balance one element at a time

After setting 2H₂O, the products contain four oxygen atoms in total: two in CO₂ and two across the water molecules. The reactant O₂ supplies oxygen in pairs, so a coefficient 2 gives four oxygen atoms on the left.

The final counts are C: 1 and 1, H: 4 and 4, O: 4 and 4. The coefficients 1:2:1:2 have no common factor and are therefore the smallest whole-number ratio.

Why changing a subscript is forbidden

A coefficient changes how many particles take part. A subscript changes the identity or composition of each particle. Turning H₂O into H₂O₂ would replace water with hydrogen peroxide; it would not balance the original reaction.

For more complicated equations, it often helps to leave hydrogen and oxygen until late because they appear in many compounds. Treat an unchanged polyatomic ion as one unit when it appears intact on both sides.
